LE DEMOCRATE DE L'AISNE: A NEWSPAPER PRINTED USING TRADITIONAL METHODS
"I was born near Vervins and I've always lived here, in Thiérache, because I love my region. I'm passionately attached to Picardy! What I love most are its landscapes, sense of tranquillity and rich variety of monuments. I learnt the printing trade by listening to and watching my elders, who passed on their love for the profession. The job of a printer is quite complicated. It took me three years in apprenticeship, followed by a year of advanced work, and a few additional years to truly master the techniques. We print the newspaper Le Démocrate de l’Aisne, which has 1,200 subscribers, including some in Greece and Australia: expatriates from Thiérarche who are nostalgic for our lovely way of life. Our printing house is open to the public. We've noticed a revival of interest for old crafts, trades in the process of disappearing. Many people are surprised when they come here, because unlike many of the traditional businesses where everything is sterilised, our workshop plunges you into another time. We work in the same conditions as 1900. Everything is the same, except the machines that have developed, but the working system is inspired by Gutenberg. There is a particular odour in the workshop, a mixture of wood and ink. The smell of authenticity!"
