Destination : Thiérache
The Thiérache, to the north-east of Picardy, is a land of rivers, meadows, patchwork fields, undulating dales and leafy forests. Wine cellars and churches dotted along the way are ideal for taking a refreshing break. One of the characteristics of this land is the fortified churches which attest to journeys and invasions through history. More than fifty are open to the public, such as Plomion, Parfondeval, and Jeantes (and its 400m² of contemporary frescoes by Charles Eyck).

Marie-Pierre GRUSON’s La Folie Douce
“Here, inhabitants used to make a fruit wine, for themselves – a bit like a family jewel. We haven’t invented anything, we have just taken advantage of the know-how of the local people. With our two hectares of strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, black currants and a little bit of rhubarb to make subtle blends, we created La Folie Douce. Today it has become the “Regional aperitif”. It is neither a fortified wine, nor a sparkling wine.”
Claire HALLEUX’s Maroilles cheese at the Ferme de la Fontaine in Fontaine Orion.
“It isn’t easy to make a good Maroilles! You need to anticipate constantly so that the composition of the milk, which is constantly evolving, doesn't change. We only use milk that has been milked the same morning, straight from the udder. This means that there is no risk of germs due to storage. For the refining process, we use a refurbished cellar dating from 1848.”
Thiérache also offers a wide choice of outdoor activities!
Set off on a walk, a horse ride or bike road on the Green Path and the many trails that meander through Thiérache, or travel down the Oise in a canoe or kayak, admiring the lush landscapes. To keep all the family happy, take a relaxing break at the Ile Verte water centre in Hirson. Thiérache is a breath of fresh air!
