Ranked among the most beautiful bays in the world, the Bay of Somme can also be crossed at low tide!
On the programme: a superb discovery of the ecosystem, magnificent landscapes and a good dose of iodized air. Emmanuel Dubert, guide and leader of the 'Promenade en Baie' association at Le Crotoy, organises these life-size outings. He offers you the opportunity to cross the Bay of Somme on foot, a crossing between Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme which lasts approximately three hours.
Passionately fond of this estuary, he enjoys introducing visitors to it and will help you discover, in complete safety, its different environments: the channels, tidal flats and salt marshes. Each environment possesses its own vegetation and population of seals, birds and cockles.
You will learn to recognise salicornia, sea purslane or even sea aster, “which is cooked like spinach”. Your guide has culinary secrets to share with you! You will understand the life of the bay with the passing tides and seasons.
“We’re in a place that is constantly changing. In autumn and winter, you can discover the life that is buried underneath, it is one of the treasures of the bay because if there are so many birds it is because they can find food to eat. The same is true for men, whether they be hunters, fishermen on foot collecting worms to fish, plants for cooking such as sea purslane or aster tripolium, they make excellent tarts … the sheep also create landscapes, a bit like a forest.
The bay is also full of viewpoints, different horizons, you can catch a glimpse of Saint Valery sur Somme, Cap Hornu, the hunters’ huts, the salt meadows, Le Crotoy, life can be seen everywhere. In fact, the crossing of the bay is an adventure for all, friendly outings, there are plenty of things to see, smell and learn, there is something to please everyone.”
