Les Jardins Remarquables (Outstanding Gardens)This label was created in 2004 by the Ministry of Culture, with the assistance of the National Council of Parks and Gardens, and is aimed at recognising and highlighting parks and gardens that are open to the public and well maintained. It extends beyond ancient gardens, whether protected or not as historical monuments, to include recently created gardens.
This state label, awarded for a 5-year period, is renewable and revisable. The award criteria are composition, integration into the site and the quality of the surroundings, the presence of outstanding elements, botanical interest, historical interest (for ancient gardens only) and the quality of maintenance.
If awarded the label, owners commit to ensuring the regular upkeep of their garden, opening to the public at least 4 days a year, participating in a national scheme (Rendez-vous aux Jardins - ‘Garden Visits’ - or Heritage Days), making information available to the public and displaying a plaque bearing the label logo.
Today, 200 gardens enjoy this label throughout France, 14 of which are in Picardie:
