Watercress was introduced for the first time in Picardy

It was while travelling around Erfurt, Germany during the winter of 1809 that Joseph Cardon (administrator of the hospitals of the Great Napoleonic Army) discovered small plots of greenery sticking out like a sore thumb in the snow-covered landscape. When he returned to France, in 1811, he created the first artificial watercress bed in Avilly-Saint-Léonard (south of Picardy)
